The Cascadier: Backgrounds

Each Machine, or level, for The Cascadier called for a hand painted background that is textured onto the backboard of the machine itself, reflecting the theme of the machine and its corresponding element. Once a level is complete the full artwork is unlocked in the games menu for the player's viewing pleasure.

Level one is Fortuna’s machine. I wanted to depict an Elysium field/ Mt Olympus scene, given the characters Greek and Roman mythological influence.

Level two centers around not one god but rather one split into four, depicting the four cardinal directions. I rendered a whirling tempest that culminates to an apex that, in the machine, would center around a spinning compass.

Level three was earth, and since the architecture of the machine was very dwarven in nature, I figured a fitting backdrop would be a scene inspired by the mines of moria. An admittedly self indulgent nod to the works of Tolkien, which I love.

This backdrop was for the final level of the game, Showdown. The machine's theme was centered around a stage set, or more accurately a very elaborate puppet show. So it seemed fitting to render the backdrop as a stage backdrop would.
